Ensuring employees are happy by offering an appealing corporate culture is something the company believes is a must. Therefore, the Future Office pilot project assured better office space management on the one hand and encouraged agility and innovativeness on the part of the workforce on the other. It also boosted employee health. The digital transformation is something virtually all industries are now having to get to grips with.

In August 2018, a test space some 600 sq m in size called Future Office was set up for 36 employees initially to reflect modern styles of working and provide different types of workspaces for all the different tasks. This multipurpose, collaborative space is furnished with Wilkhahn’s flexible Stitz sitting-standing stools and somewhere where people arrive, meet up, interact and eat and drink with one another, a place for them to enjoy and relax.

The home-base areas have been designed to cover a desk-sharing rate of 0.8 workspaces. Height-adjustable desks and the new AT ESP office chair guarantee more agility while people are sitting down and encourage them to alternate between sitting and standing. With seating heights of up to 62 cm and a patented forward tilt, which allows people’s backs to touch the backrest at all times, the office chair fosters intuitive and frequent changes of posture from sitting, to leaning to standing. And thanks to the automatic weight adjustment feature, all a new user of the chair needs to do is to change the seating height.

Furthermore, fold-up, mobile Timetable tables and stackable Aline chairs support agile collaboration in the special workspaces that offer somewhere to really focus on the job at hand. Stitz sitting-standing stools, Sitzbock pommel-horse seats and Landing wall reliefs promote informal interaction between people and the Stand-up stools are ideal for those all-important activity-based breaks.

“The new AT office chair allowed us to enter new territory in terms of sitting-standing options because the whole sitting experience is completely different. But once people get used to it, nobody wants their old office chair or the old office environment back,” comment project director Petra Schnegelsberg and Fred-Martin Dillenberger, head of corporate real estate management who was in charge of the pilot project at SMA.

Free-to-move and new styles of working are clearly two aspects that belong to one another when it’s all about showing appreciation for your workforce, boosting agility and health and promoting smart cost and space management.
