It was 20 years ago that Wilkhahn won the German Environmental Prize from the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) – for “integrating consistently ecological criteria throughout the company”. Since then, Wilkhahn has been invited to the award ceremony every year; in 2016, it is being presented by the German President for the fifth time, and there are no less than three winners: Prof. Angelika Mettke (Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus) was honored for her reuse of concrete slabs reclaimed from prefabricated buildings, building contractor Walter Feeß for recycling mineral construction waste, and Dutch businessman Bas van Abel for his “Fairphone”, which improves human and environmental conditions throughout its production and supply chain.
Taking the occasion of Orgatec 2016 to present the “Printstool One” project, a stool manufactured from biopolymers based on the natural wood material of lignin using 3D printing, Wilkhahn once again underscored its ambition to interlink high-tech design with responsibility – and thus live up to the purpose and prestige of the German Environmental Award.
