Al fresco picnic

The green studded flooring in Stuttgart’s Staatsgalerie is protected and enjoys cult status.

Anyone afraid of pink, blue and green? Clearly not British architect James Stirling who designed the Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart in 1984. The building, which is now preserved as a historic monument and acts as an extension of the classicist Alte Staatsgalerie, is a prime example of post-modernist architecture. The museum is clad in strips of travertine and sandstone. It’s a vast composition varying in size, playfully alluding to historical buildings and urban fragments. This impression is interspersed by brightly coloured elements – steel girders, handrails or window frames in rich colours. Grass-green studded flooring meanders through the whole building that has now achieved cult status and just been refurbished.

The same theme is also continued in the museum’s eatery. The recently opened Fresko restaurant with German-Italian cuisine has renovated its premises in close liaison with the authority responsible for the preservation of historic buildings. And it has also consistently adopted the meadow concept with the tables and Wilkhahn’s comfortable Occo chairs arranged like large flowers. Occo’s organic design underscores this metaphor. Its white open shell with red cushioning offers a deliberate contrast with the green flooring, but the black tables on the other hand play a more understated role. It’s no coincidence that the green-white-red colour combination is a subtle reminder of the Italian tricolour flag. After all, Fresko’s menu does have strong Italian influences. Another of the restaurant’s highlights is its diverse wine list with over 40 wines that invites guests to stop by, savour a glass or two and perhaps stay for a while.
