Can a digitalised world learn lessons from the Bauhaus?

29.05.2019

What is still relevant from the Bauhaus experiment to design disciplines in an increasingly digitalised society? At Wilkhahn, the 2019 Bauhaus centenary year is all about learning from the Bauhaus. Following on from the colloquium in 2018, this year, Wilkhahn is inviting guests to its architecture symposium entitled Can a digitalised world learn lessons from the Bauhaus?

Can a digitalised world learn lessons from the Bauhaus?
Monday, 24 June 2019
9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Fritz-Hahne-Strasse 8, 31848 Bad Münder, Germany

3 – 5 p.m.
Arne-Jacobsen-Foyer, Herrenhäuser Strasse 3a, 30419 Hanover

Just like the Bauhaus considered industrial production to be a form of craftsmanship a century ago, today the question is how digital technologies can change, supplement or even replace previous industrial and craft techniques. What impact does this have on the creative process of architects, designers and artists? And can we learn anything for the present and the future of design culture from the different approaches, teaching and processes at the Bauhaus? What new practices can the Bauhaus concepts of art and technology (Walter Gropius) or people’s needs instead of the need for luxury or theory and practice (Hannes Meyer) be translated into? The Wilkhahn symposium aims to discuss these issues by bringing together protagonists from the worlds of architecture, design and theory.

The Wilkhahn building, designed by Bauhaus student Herbert Hirche (1929), is the setting for the Bauhaus architecture symposium entitled Can the digitalised world learn from the Bauhaus? Shown with the new portal here.
