Values and promises – these two seemingly simple and timeless ideas have given rise to highly complex debates in the age of globalization and all-encompassing digitization. This is especially true when it comes to the relationship between consumer behavior in society, on the one hand, and the demand for ecological sustainability on the other. How products are designed is of key importance in this regard. The World Industrial Design Day in Frankfurt therefore foregrounds these two terms against the roles played by industrial design in a smart world.
What do good and sustainable actually mean when it comes to designing products? And what’s new about the challenges facing today’s design process? In a series of talks and field reports from research and practice, societal, ethical, and ecological aspects of industrial design are closely examined and discussed.
It goes without saying that there will also be fascinating insights into digital office work. In his paper entitled “The Body and Mind Caught Between the Stone Age and High-Tech – What is Sustainable Design in Digitized Office Environments?”, Burkhard Remmers, Head of International Communication at Wilkhahn, not only highlights the risks and rewards that digitization harbors but also presents novel concepts for combining social and ecological qualities to produce sustainable office environments.
