The focus of the DGNB’s work lies in the certification system that helps to plan and evaluate sustainable buildings. Over 1,000 awards have been presented in the platinum, gold, silver or bronze categories to date. The DGNB also recently introduced a new category for sustainably extended and furnished interiors. It concentrates on health and well-being and also assesses the rooms’ furniture. And what’s more, to achieve the new diamond label of excellence, the assessment must include the qualities of the building in terms of building culture too. As a furniture manufacturer whose sustainability strategy has for decades been to make superbly designed products that endure, Wilkhahn welcomes these key new aspects. The addition of the new qualitative criteria was underpinned by the appointment of Barbara Ettinger-Brinckmann, president of the Federal Chamber of Architects, to the new DGNB presidium.

Dr Christine Lemaitre, CEO of the DGNB, talking to our colleague Mette Quist from the Green Building Council Denmark and architect Gerhard Wittfeld.

The DGNB invited guests to the anniversary party in the Academy of the Arts in Berlin’s Hansa neighbourhood. Prominent guest speakers from the worlds of politics, industry and society were German building minister Dr Barbara Hendricks, social psychologist and author Professor Harald Welzer, plus the president of the World Green Building Council, Tai Lee Siang, who praised Germany as being a role model for the global green-building movement. Mette Qvist from the Danish Green Building Council and Gerhart Wittfeld from Kadawittfeldarchitektur took part in the panel discussion afterwards. One of the DGNB’s objectives for the next ten years is that sustainable building has to become the new default. Wilkhahn is looking forward to playing a pivotal role in achieving this goal through its new health-boosting concepts and design quality in offices.
