Dutch craftsmanship meets contemporary office environments

20.05.2019

At the beginning of June, Rotterdam will again become the hub of the Dutch design scene. The number of visitors to the Design District Rotterdam from 5 to 7 June 2019 is expected to reach several thousands. This year, the trade show will only be held in the Van Nelle Factory. Around 200 manufacturers from the interior-design sector as well as numerous design schools and up-and-coming young designers have announced they will be taking part. Wilkhahn will be there again and its showroom in the historic factory building is one of the event’s hotspots. The company restaurant in the iconic modernist building is also kitted out with Wilkhahn furniture (1925-31 Brinkmann & van der Vlug, refurbished in 2004 by Vessel de Jonge Architecten), above all with the Chassis four-leg chair (design: Stefan Diez) and the Aline tables (design: Andreas Störiko).

Quite a crowd waiting to get into to the Van Nelle Factory during Design District Rotterdam (here’s a photo from 2018, source: Design District Rotterdam).

In addition to collaborating with American flooring manufacturer Interface, Wilkhahn has also joined forces with lighting designer Marc de Groot this year. His hand-made geometric lighting designs now have a cult following and have already “cracked” New York. They are an interesting complement to Wilkhahn stylish design. The showcase will focus on the new products shown at Orgatec. In addition to the Intra conference chair (Phoenix Design), the latest, three-dimensional free-to-move AT task chair is also on display.

Wilkhahn is also again one of the stops on facility management association Facilitair’s special tour, which also offers talks on current issues such as: “What does a contemporary office environment look like? Where do I find these sorts of office environments? How sustainable is or should the design of these workspaces be? Where and how do technologies influence the design of workplaces?” And, of course, it’s Wilkhahn in particular that can provide answers, backed up by examples, to these questions at Design District Rotterdam.
