Emerging Architecture: exhibition and winning entries

[06-01-2007] The 26 award-winning entries of the AR Award for Emerging Architecture 2006 will be on show in an exhibition in Germany starting the end of June. The competition is one of the most important in the world for young architects. Since 1999, The Architectural Review (AR) magazine has presented awards once a year for outstanding projects in the field of buildings, interior design, landscaping and urban planning projects, as well as product design. The exhibition will be presented by office furniture manufacturer Wilkhahn, who is also one of the sponsors.

Bad Münder. For the AR Award for Emerging Architecture, young architects up to the age of 45 can enter projects that have been realized. The international magazine, The Architectural Review, presented this coveted award recently for the eighth time. The Awards attracted entries from more than 50 countries and ranged from interior design to landscape projects, including both small pavilions and large complexes. The projects were judged by a six-strong jury comprising internationally acclaimed architects, including Kim Nielsen from the Danish architects' office of 3XNielsen, as well as Christine Binswanger from Herzog & de Meuron. The jurors chose three winners; seven others were highly commended and 16 received honourable mentions. One of the three awards went to a project by the German architectural duet, Anna Heringer and Eike Roswag. Wilkhahn is showcasing all award-winning projects in an exhibition running until the end of the year that will tour five German cities. The showcase starts in Hanover on 25 June; further venues are Bremen, Cologne, Nuremburg and Leipzig.

Award-winners from Germany, Japan and the USA
Anna Heringer and Eike Roswag convinced the jury with their entry of a school they built in Rudrapur, Bangladesh. The building uses loam and bamboo as main materials, and combines simple building technology with local architectural traditions. At this school, teachers use free forms of learning to promote the individual ability and interests of the children. The architecture of the building reflects this principle by means of different types of rooms and application scope. This is a remarkable example of how carefully considered architecture can change the lives of so many people, in such poor rural areas too. Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto was one of the other winners of an award for building a children's treatment centre in Hokkaido, Japan. An ingenious geometric plan comprising informal clusters maximizes personal room to manoeuvre and creates space for the private sphere. The jury chose a sculpture-like pedestrian bridge by the US team of architects Miró and Rivera as the third winning project. The bridge is located at Lake Austin, Texas.
