Van Nelle Factory wins the Europa Nostra Award

[06-18-2008] Since 2001, the Wilkhahn NL showroom has been located in the Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, Rotterdam, where the Dutch exhibition of "100% Design" takes place every June. The building is quite simple in style and has become one of the most important industrial buildings of the 20th century. Designed by famous architects Mart Stam, Johannes Andreas Brinkmann and Leendert Cornelis Van der Vlugt between 1926 - 1930, it is regarded as the only building that was consistently built according to the ideals of Constructivism. The Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, in which tobacco, coffee and tea were once processed, has now won the Europa Nostra Award for cultural heritage of the European Union.

The building was awarded one of the prizes in the "Restoration" category and is thus one of the six best projects for the conservation of European cultural heritage. Extensive historical studies enabled the operators of the building to succeed in restoring essential qualities of the building in line with its original state and also to achieve appropriate re-use: today the building houses showrooms, studios and offices of creative and design-oriented sectors and manufacturers, such as Wilkhahn. The prize was presented at Durham Cathedral, England, on 12 June. Winning this award has served to attract even more visitors interested in architecture and culture to Rotterdam who want to view this unique building and - in passing also register the Wilkhahn Showroom. We could not envisage having a more attractive, interesting and better frequented location for Wilkhahn Netherlands ...
