"Behind the walls": Maryam Mohammadi and Klemens Ortmeyer present photographs from Iran and Germany

[07-31-2006] On 8 August at 7 pm the photographic exhibition "Behind the walls" will be opening in the Architekturpavillon at the Technische Universität (TU) Braunschweig. 50 large-format photographs by the photographers Maryam Mohammadi and Klemens Ortmeyer showcase various perspectives gathered on daily walks through the central Iranian town of Yazd. The goal of this joint project: to promote the cultural exchange between the Orient and the Occident. Those interested in the project can gain an insight into daily and religious life in Iran. The Deutscher Werkbund Nord e.V. is the patron of the event .

50 large-format photographic prints convey impressions of life in Iran and current projects of the photographers. It becomes clear that the different cultures also result in the specific way in which the two photographers see things. Besides work from Yazd, Maryam Mohammadi is also presenting a series of photographs on the topic of women in society in Iran. The additional pairs of photographs by Klemens Ortmeyer demonstrate a dialogue with the themes of the structure of photographs, light and time.

Maria Pfitzner, patroness and President of the Deutscher Werkbund Nord e.V., and Prof. Berthold Burkhardt, Vice-President of the TU Braunschweig will be opening the exhibition in the Architekturpavillon of the TU at 7 pm. Following an introduction by Prof. Dr. Rolf Sachse of the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HBK) Saar, visitors can enjoy a performance by T.A.N.Z Braunschweig.

A look "behind the walls"
The idea of freelance photographer Maryam Mohammadi and architectural photographer Klemens Ortmeyer for the joint project "Behind the walls" arose during a summer academy of Iranian and European photographers held by the Austrian cultural organization x-change in the central Iranian town of Yazd in September 2005. Equipped with a 35 mm digital camera and a large-format camera, Mohammadi and Ortmeyer decided to capture scenes from everyday and religious life in Yazd. Two daytime walks through the town, two different angles of view "behind the walls". This is the way in which this joint project would like to promote cultural understanding between East and West. A discussion with the two photographers will take place at the close of the exhibition in the exhibition hall on 25 August at 6 pm.
