DinA range - Fascinating simplicity: From table to office

[11-13-2003] DinA range
(Design: beyond design, Timo Küchler, Udo Schill)

In the beginning of next year Wilkhahn will be launching the DinA furnishing range by the two Stuttgart designers Timo Küchler and Udo Schill. Three ingenious table surface dimensions and three table heights create a set of office tables, which offer almost unlimited scope for combination, always producing harmonious spatial references and calm formations. Together with a range of storage units that follow the same basic proportions, office interiors can be modified with great ease and at any time and with unlimited versatility based on an extremely simple principle.

When the working environment becomes more complex, and demands made on people become more multi-faceted, the need for simplicity increases. An aesthetic approach, which reduces complexity and which radiates clarity, calm and order, also becomes a matter of both work ergonomics and relieving strain. Simplicity of design and handling thus become decisive aspects of a people-oriented work environment.

One principle - three surface areas
The basic idea is both simple and fascinating: just take the area and proportions of double the DIN A 0 paper format (German Industrial Standard) and halve it twice to create three surface dimensions. DinA, the name of the range, is deduced from this, as well as the model identifiers for the tables: 1/1 table, 1/2 table und 1/4 table.
The fascinating point is that it does not matter how the table surfaces are added and combined - they always produce solutions that are marked by extremely minimalist design and a sense of harmonious calm.

Shown as model: 1/1, 1/2 and1/4 - three surface areas always offer the same proportions and may be combined as required.

The secret of this harmony is based on three design characteristics:

  • The depth and width of the rectangular surfaces are in the same ratio (1:1.414) to one another so that, when linked, no further complexity arises due to different proportions, for example caused by customary rectangular, square and triangular forms - let alone so-called irregular shapes.
  • The depth of one surface becomes the width of the next smallest surface, allowing homogeneous surface areas to be created when added.
  • The ratio of dimensions (1/1, 1/2, 1/4) automatically ensures spatial cross-references, even if the tables are arranged in groups that are positioned a distance apart.

Shown as model: side table, sitting, standing - these are the functional heights in which DinA is available.

Three surfaces, three heights

  • The 1/1 table, measuring 118.8 cm x 168 cm, has spacious dimensions, without creating too much distance to those sitting opposite. It is therefore highly suitable for a manager's workplace or a conference and meeting table.
  • The 1/2 measures 84 cm x 118.8 cm. That is incredibly compact without causing a feeling of being cramped. This is due to a relatively large table depth, which even allows application as a VDU workstation.
  • The 1/4 table does, after all, measure 59.4 cm x 84 cm. This provides an efficient desk area.

DinA is available in three different heights to cover a wide scope of work scenarios and processes, and working positions:

  • In normal sitting height, as a desk or a task and conference table.
  • In a lower version, as a storage surface and side table or lounge table for more informal areas.
  • In standing height, as a high desk, or as a high table for meetings to continue deadlocked gatherings as dynamic "standing sessions".

Shown as model: harmonious spatial references are always created due to consistent proportions - even if the tables are positioned a distance apart.

Simply the best.
The technical details of DinA are as simple and top quality as the concept itself:

  • The table tops comprise through-dyed MDF panels with protective lacquer.
  • The frame consists of a hidden steel underframe and the table legs in matt stainless steel profiles, with concealed screw-fittings at the corner joints. Floor irregularities can be levelled out by means of adjustable glides.

From a table range to a complete furnishing solution.
In addition to DinA tables, three storage units are planned, which follow the same basic geometric pattern: the large storage unit corresponds to an area measuring 1/4 of the table and is available either as a low version (with two adjacent drawers) or in table height (with four wide drawers). The small storage unit (1/8) has been designed for standing height and has eight drawers. This makes DinA a multi-purpose table range for versatile applications.
The storage units are also made from through-dyed MDF panels with mitre joints and protective lacquer. They are fitted with special, integral roller glides and have been designed as monolithic units without any handles and anything projecting, allowing them to blend with the tables to form a perfect synthesis.

DinA range (Design: beyond design) The 1/1 table is equally suitable as amanager's workplace or a spacious conference table for six.

DinA range (Design: Beyond design) However tables and storage units are combined, the result is always harmonious cross-references and structures.

Professional improvization.
Besides the principle of simplicity of form, DinA also reflects the principle of simplicity of change: regardless of how tables and storage units are configured - there will always be harmonious cross-references and coordinated solutions in terms of proportions. The furnishing elements may be regrouped as required, without the use of any linking mechanisms or tools. This makes DinA an ideal range for introducing change in a spontaneous manner, whilst safeguarding aesthetic continuity. From an individual office to spacious office layouts - in a fascinatingly simple combination of identity and change.

Serial production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2004.
