| Gold and silver for Wilkhahn office chairs Solis and Solis F at presentation of International Design Prize Baden-Württemberg [09-18-2003] Wilkhahn wins highest design awards yet again: on 13 September, Wilkhahn was awarded the coveted "Focus in Gold" prize handed over by Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Walter Döhring. This time the prize was awarded on the theme of "Designed for Balance". The new office chair Solis, which the wiege Design Studio developed for Wilkhahn, was the only chair in the office furniture industry to receive an award. Silver was won by Solis F, the model variation with an innovative construction comprising an aluminium frame with stretch material. 440 products from all over the world had been entered for the competition after the Design Center Stuttgart had set "Focus Balance" as this year's theme for the International Design Prize Baden-Württemberg. The six, high-ranking members of the jury from four countries had the task of judging the entries according to their design quality and their contribution to both physical and mental balance. Products were selected for awards which seemed particularly suited to maintaining and promoting well-being, health and vitality.
For Michael Englisch, who accepted the prize as managing director of wiege and on behalf of Wilkhahn, this prize is confirmation of the desired design approach: "With Solis we wanted to design a chair that can do everything, but which also retains a consistently simple form and can be operated fully intuitively. Today, office work has become so complex that structure, calm and simplicity are no longer only questions of taste, but also of well-being. Aesthetics and ergonomics are very closely related at this point."
With the Solis office chair range, frame structure and seat shell have therefore been consistently reduced to symmetrical shapes and homogeneous, geometrical surfaces. The interplay of shell design and innovative automatic synchro-adjustment allow exemplary comfort, e.g. due to the automatic lowering of the seat front. Sit down, adjust the height and for weight - that's all!
The jury especially commended the "very good balance between the new requirements of the modern data processing world of work and classic office furniture", which had been achieved "with very slim proportions". Wiege was especially delighted about the fact that in Stuttgart only nine international prizes in gold were awarded throughout all industries and that Solis was the only winner of gold in the office furniture industry. This is now the third high-calibre award for Solis in less than 12 months following the winning of the Innovation Prize "Architektur + Office" and the "Red Dot" of the Designzentrum Nordrheinwestfalen.
