Award-winning simplicity from the start: The new DinA furnishing range

[05-07-2004] Bad Münder. The new DinA furnishing range from Wilkhahn has caused a sensation, even before going into serial production. The range has already won three top design awards this year. The range of tables and storage units has been designed to meet prestigious standards and is fascinating due to the reduction to just one basic form. Three sizes and heights allow maximum versatility. The global market launch through international distributors, entitled "The fascination of simplicity" (in German: "Faszination Einfachheit") is about to start.

Hardly any other German standard has achieved such international acclaim as the German Industrial Standard (DIN). The more complex the world becomes, the more important it is to have simple solutions: DIN guarantees the ultimate in terms of standardization, precision and perfect fit.

It was no coincidence that the two Stuttgart designers, Timo Küchler and Udo Schill, modelled their concept on the DIN A paper standard. The aim was to develop a range of tables and storage units that first and foremost conveys clarity, calm and aesthetic concentration, while also offering endless combination and application options. The range comprises a large, a medium-sized and a small table (1/1, 1/2, 1/4 format) and two storage unit formats (1/4, 1/8), and is available in the three functional heights of low, sitting and standing.

It was the sophisticated simplicity of the range that convinced both design experts and juries of the qualities of the new Wilkhahn range, and led them to make three awards in no less than two months: the iF-Design Award 2004 at CeBIT in Hanover, the nomination for the German Design Prize 2004, and the best of the best reddot award of the Design Center North-Rhine/Westphalia in Essen.

The high-quality simplicity of the concept is projected in the materials, workmanship and innovative details too. Through-dyed panel with textured lacquer and matt blasted stainless steel legs give the range a powerful, monolithic appearance. Drawers with no visible handles, moulded accessories trays, laptop shelves and storage nets for cable management underneath tables create fascination by means of perfection and intelligence.

Fig. Materials and surface finishes have also been reduced to essentials: the drawer fronts, with no visible handles, the Volumina and the table tops are all in MDF, through-dyed in the colour black-grey.

DinA will be available through Wilkhahn international distributors from the second week in May. Wilkhahn has prepared something quite special for the occasion: with a view to making the simplicity of this range a hands-on experience, Wilkhahn has developed a planning guide entitled "DinA - Layout", in addition to the product brochure itself. This document follows the tradition of handicrafts' templates and provides a playful approach to this fascinating concept.

A second point of attraction in the market launch is the pricing of the range, which is designed to meet prestigious requirements in executives' offices, conference interiors, lobbies and reception areas: Wilkhahn is making an introductory offer of all table formats at a standard price of EUR 750 (+ VAT). This opens up some interesting perspectives: with effective planning, four workplaces can be created using only three tables .

Wilkhahn president Dr. Jochen Hahne is convinced that the new range will be a great success:"The overwhelming response on the part of experts, such as designers and architects, shows that there is a deep longing for orientation, sustainability and lasting appeal - beyond fleeting fashion, bargain-hunting and throw-away mentality. The DinA range conveys these values in a manner that is immediately tangible - and even before the official launch, we are involved in some highly interesting projects."
